S’wak polls: Rude wake-up call for PKR
If Snap is indeed being funded by BN as PKR strenuously claims, this is something that’s best seen to be believed.
The propaganda barrage is intense. The story is that the Sarawak National Party (Snap) is a fifth column within the opposition alliance and or otherwise funded by the ruling Barisan Nasional to split votes and give the latter victory by default.
The fact that such self-serving talk emanates openly from PKR does not seem to augur too well for the fledging opposition alliance in Sarawak. PKR is clearly the spoiler in the pack. It’s true that the BN in Sarawak has been known to fund at least one mosquito party which appears from nowhere, on the eve of state elections, to make a bid for every seat.
The most infamous example was Parti Negara Rakyat Sarawak (Negara) in the early 1990s which was funded by Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB)-linked moneybags. The party lost every seat but in the process managed to draw away enough votes from the opposition especially in the marginal and mixed seats.
If Snap is indeed being funded by BN as PKR strenuously claims, notwithstanding various devious attempts in the past by Sarawak Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud to finish it off once and for all, this is something that’s best seen to be believed.
Taib’s explanation not good enough
Chief Minister Taib Mahmud's video admission to having engaged in business activities abroad has raised more questions about his family's wealth.
KUCHING: It is not enough for Chief Minister Taib Mahmud to claim that he and his family “are good in business” and therefore managed to amass an unexplainable amount of money simply because of “acumen”, said state opposition DAP.Calling for Taib to post all his properties on his website so “people can know”, DAP leader Chong Chieng Jen said: “And only then you (Taib) can rebut the accusation.
“It is not sufficient to say that his (Taib’s) children are good in business and that that they have business acumen and their wealth was created through normal business.
“It is not sufficient to convince the people. The public have the right to know and he (Taib) has a duty to disclose to the public.”
Sokongan penduduk pedalaman Sarawak meningkat
Seorang penduduk, Muhammad Daud Asseng Abdulah, berkata tanah itu diduduki keluarga mereka sejak ratusan tahun dahulu tetapi kini digadai kerajaan Sarawak.

Lelaki Lahir Tahun 1880 Masih Dalam Daftar Pengundi SPR

Sarawakians: What more should they ask for?
Written by Rama Ramanathan
My brother and I were on a jambu tree. We were munching on the crunchy red fruit. Life was good. Sweet juice was running down our chins, cheeks and hands. We thought we had chosen our positions carefully. We thought we would not be food for red ants. We were wrong. Soon we were smacking the ants. First the ones on our bodies. Then the ones on the branches. Next we jumped off. We ran away. We ranted.
That scene from my childhood came to mind when I saw a video about Rumah Nyawin, a 12 door longhouse near Bintulu, with 120 residents.
On 04 January 2007, hundreds of uniformed officers from the Land and Survey (L & S) Department and tens of policemen arrived. Bulldozers and chainsaws were deployed.
The longhouse was demolished. The residents were weeping. Some, just made homeless, gathered to pray. Rubble remained. Soon they were living in tents.
The presentation was designed to grab the emotions. I wept.
I stewed in my anger for a week. Then, I did some research.
On 04 October 2006, the Government of Sarawak issued a 30-day eviction notice to the residents of the longhouse. The basis was that the land belonged to the state, and the state had given the land to MARDI (Malaysia Agriculture Research Institute).

‘BN using army, soldiers to frighten voters’
Taib Mahmud's regime has much to lose and is 'instilling fear' in the people, according to Sarawak PKR.
KUCHING: The state Barisan Nasional (BN) is allegedly using its military personnel to intimidate voters in the outlying areas in Sarawak.
According to Sarawak PKR chief Baru Bian, he has been receiving reports of army personnel threatening constituents as “there is so much at stake”.
“The state BN government even uses the army to threaten people as there is so much at stake in this coming election.
“Just last evening I have received reports from my area, Ba’Kelalan, that the army personnel who are now constructing roads to Ba’kelalan are telling people if they vote for the opposition and the Barisan Nasional lost, they will tear down all the schools,” he said.
‘Call home and push for changes’
PKR wants Sarawakians who are unable to return home for the election to make the phone call and convince their families and friends to vote for change.
KUCHING: Sarawak PKR is urging Sarawakians who are unable to return home to cast their votes to call home and encourage their family members and friends to vote for change.
Sarawak PKR chief Baru Bian said this was the only way the opposition could spread the word considering the mainstream media was inaccessible to them and the blogs were being closely monitored.
“Our only hope to disseminate news and information to the rural voters is through their children, the intellectual and professional people who can go back and vote.
“For those who are unable to return to Sarawak to vote, they should telephone their parents and relatives of the need to change.
Pakatan gov't experience to help penetrate rural S'wak
Kuek Ser Kuang Keng
Although the 'political tsunami' of the 2008 general election is losing steam in the peninsula as shown by the recent by-elections, it will still be Pakatan's major weapon in fighting the 10th Sarawak state election on April 16.
The formation of five Pakatan Rakyat state governments after the last general election, will be portrayed by the Sarawak opposition as a strong example of how to convey a simple message to the Sarawak electorate, especially the natives in rural areas, that the BN is unable to equal that governance.
What appears as the most basic political concept to most people - that a political party or coalition needs to secure most of the seats in the legislature assembly to form a government, is apparently beyond the grasp of a majority of the rural native communities, - after 48 years of BN rule.
For them, the BN is the ultimate power able to advance their livelihood, or wield the rod should they revolt.
Therefore, the opposition campaign in the rural areas is nothing more than basic political education, that the people have the right to elect a government of their choice, even if it is not the 'Dacing'.
